Hoops, Bustles, and Underwires
It was fashionable for elegant ladies to have small waists and backs, and for children to wear corsets at a very young age. Women endured having their waists compressed by tight lacing to a very fashionable 18-22 inches. The invention of the bustle created a fashion statement in the rear of the gown. Underwear was also elaborately detailed.
